Information to stay in Thailand
Siam Fighting Fish are named after the country they are from (Siam) Thailand, is better known as the Betta fish. The most popular of the Betta fish is Betta Splendens (Genus species). Betta fish can be found in several parts of Asia such as Vietnam, Cambodia, Malaysia, and of course Thailand. Wild Bettas can usually be found in water that moves slowly, such as small rivers or paddy fields.Bettas are known for their ability as a labyrinth fish, which means it can get oxygen from both the water and from the outside air. They are probably even more famous for their violent and defensive temperament. Betta fish generally fights to defend their territory to make sure they have food and preferred preference in breeding. Many people in Asia still raise and fight Bettas for recreation. It is well known that two male Bettas in the same aquarium will often fight each other. You can recognize Betta fighting pretty easily. They will flare out their gill covers and fins in an attempt to make themselves look bigger and more intimidating to drive the other fish away. At times the more violent Bettas will pinch and bite the other fishes in the aquarium. They are capable of killing if a fight goes on long enough. When people first started breeding Betta fish the violent Betta behavior was bred into them.Thankfully over the last few years, the violent behavior is beginning to be bred out of them. For the most part it is only males that will fight, but it is not unheard of for males to attack females. So you must be watch carefully for any violent behavior and remove the violent fish from the tank to prevent injuries. The only real way to keep males from attacking each other is to some how separate them. If you have only one tank you will need to use one of the following: a separator, a single mesh divider, or use a “fish condo”.Fish Condos are clear containers made of plastic with holes that aquarium water to flow freely through the container. Depending on the size of your tank you may be able to hold multiple fish condos. Each Betta could have their own personal space within the same tank. You may also want to put up visual blockades between condos so the Bettas will not see the other fish.
